On July 2, the new Boise franchise opened its doors. This is the first new 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise location opening in an unserviced territory in over ten years. Congratulations to the ownership team of William Herbe, Miguel Lopez, Michael McGinnis, Drew Boyles, Raychel Huff, Nicole Zalazar, and Michael Davis. There is more than 45 years of junk experience with this ownership group. Miguel Lopez relocated from Los Angeles to Boise to manage the office and team as a part owner. We spoke to Drew and Miguel to find out a little bit more about the team and what inspired them to start this new franchise location.
What was your background prior to joining 1-800-GOT-JUNK?
Drew: My background is pretty varied. I’m a US Navy Veteran and have a MBA in finance from USC. I’ve been a Big 5 management consultant, District Manager for Starbucks Coffee, and ran a dry cleaning start-up.
Miguel: Before joining 1-800-GOT-JUNK? I was going to school full time at California State University, Long Beach and working part-time at UPS.
How did you first get involved with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and O2E Brands?
Drew: I had just experienced my first entrepreneurial failure, was getting remarried, and was considering going back into consulting when i stumbled on an article about Brian and 1-800-GOT-JUNK? in Fortune magazine. I was really inspired by the article and knew that I had to find out more about the company.
Miguel: A friend of mine was managing the Greater Los Angeles franchise. He was always telling me about what a great opportunity it was and how he was able to grow within the company. At UPS they go by tenure. I was at the bottom of the list in advancement and had to wait at least five years to move up in the company. I told my friend I wanted a shot with 1-800-GOT-JUNK? so I could have a chance to prove myself and advance within the company.
What are you looking forward to most as you open up the Boise franchise?
Drew: I’m really excited about creating ownership opportunities for 6 of my long-term, key employees.
Miguel: I’m looking forward to creating the same opportunities that were given to me in Los Angeles for someone else here in Boise.
What are your passions outside of work?
Drew: For me, it’s spending time with my wife and 5 children and being a Mayor for the City of El Segundo, California. I also love surfing, skiing, snowboarding, and coaching my kids’ soccer teams.
Miguel: My life revolves around my family. My family and I are really close and spending time with them at any social event or holiday is always an adventure. I enjoy playing sports of all kinds, but especially love football and basketball. And I can’t forget about my little fur babies! I have four little dogs that I love spending time with and chasing around the house.
Do you have any role models or key motivators in your life?
Miguel: My mom. She has always been a constant source of inspiration throughout my whole life. She raised my sister and I with no help from anyone. I watched her go through all the tough times—she would always keep her head up high. She always made sure we knew that we were going to get through it all and be better people for it when all the dust had settled.
How are you involved with your community?
Drew: We take pride in being active community members in every city we operate in. The same will hold true in Boise.
Miguel: In Los Angeles we were constantly doing charity work. I intend to keep that going here in Boise.
Fun facts about you, or anything else you’d like to share?
Miguel: I’m the tallest man in my family at 6’4”. I can bench over 300lbs, I love the Packers, and love to read and watch japanese animation.
