Bruce Springsteen says that you can’t start a fire without a spark. But this past weekend, the firefighters of Salt Lake City couldn’t start a fire without some junk.
With the help of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Salt Lake City, The Murray City Fire Department was able to collect multiple truck loads of furniture and other household items to use in a controlled and simulated burn as part of a training exercise for their station.
Items were set alight to educate firemen and women on the different burn temperatures of modern furniture (ex. Imitation leather burns very hot). They were also able to practice entering and navigating homes full of smoke with limited visibility.
“We are so happy to be able to support our local fire department,” says Brian Gibson, owner of 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Salt Lake City. “We recycle or donate as much as possible, but sometimes furniture is broken, stained, torn, or otherwise not “’donateable’. It’s great that we can stop these items from being disposed of at the landfill and give back to our community at the same time.”
“Plus we love that this junk is able to contribute to society one more time before being gone!”
