DIY storage solutions for every room

Making your own storage is easier than you think! While there are tons of products that you can buy to help you stay organized, we like the DIY option a little bit better. Why? Because they allow you to be creative, imaginative and it’s easy on the wallet!

Whether your home is lacking square footage or you’re simply trying to get organized, the good news is that there are plenty of amazing and creative storage solutions out there for every room at home. Here are some of our favorites:

The bedroom

Taking storage to a new low

Those few inches of empty space under the bed are a great spot to store off-season clothing and all types of linen, such as pillows, sheets, blankets.

For this project, all you will need is an old dresser – in fact, all you’ll really need are the drawers! If you wish, sand down the drawers and paint them a color of your choice. You can also attach new knobs or handles from your local hardware store. To finish it off, attach casters to the bottom of the drawers in all four corners. Now that the drawers can roll, you’ll have easy access to the items stored inside.

The kitchen

A good kind of tension

Have you ever tried to cook in a messy kitchen? For most people, it’s a recipe for disaster!  Having everything in its proper place makes prepping, cooking and even cleaning more enjoyable.

This storage solution is so easy, you’ll be wondering “why didn’t I think of that”? The one and only item you will need for this project is a tension rod. Use it under the kitchen sink to hang damp dish cloths, rags, or cleaning supplies (any type of spray bottle can easily hang over the rod).

The bathroom

Things are looking up

Did you know that most door frames have at least a foot-and-a-half of bare wall space that you can easily use to your advantage? For this storage solution, all you need to do is place a shelf above your door frame and voila – you’ll have a sneaky storage solution on your hands! This will provide great out-of-the-way storage where you can put extra towels, knickknacks, books or other decorative items on display. For a pleasing aesthetic, choose a shelf that has molded edges or a decorative lip (to keep items from falling).

The home office

A total shoe-in

Office desks are prone to accumulating piles of documents, invoices, pay stubs, and more. Of course, these are items that we want to throw away, but we may need to hold on to them a while longer. Instead of using a bulky filing cabinet to store these items, why not use beautifully crafted shoeboxes? A regular old shoe box can easily be transformed into a convenient storage box. When you’re all done, store the boxes in a closet, on a bookcase, or even under your desk…you’ll never even know they are there! Make sure to schedule an annual review (minimum) of the items in the boxes so you don’t end up holding on to documents that are no longer important.
