Your family’s green home challenge

Managing a family is no easy task! Today’s busy lifestyle often involves career, community commitments and—if we are lucky—a couple extra hours of sleep. With a busy agenda like this, most of us forget to squeeze in time for family.

We have the perfect idea for your next family game night: get together for a scavenger hunt that involves searching high and low for unused items at home. These items will then be donated to a local charity instead of going to the landfill.

The best part about this project? It will teach your loved ones about giving to those in need and to ‘think green’! Ready to get started?  Here’s the challenge:

Develop teams

Invite friends or neighbors to take part in the challenge too – the more the merrier! Make teams of two people or more (feel free to add some friendly competition with adults versus kids).

Make a list

It’s time to brainstorm together as a family. Think of things that are already in your house but you no longer need, want or use. Items on your list can include those that are both hard and easy to find; such as DVDs, books, specific clothing items, or old electronics. Print a list for each team and give each participant a reuseable bag or pillowcase to collect the items.

Search high and low

Get ready to have some fun! The team that finds everything on their list first wins the scavenger hunt.

Hand out prizes

The winning team gets to decide which local charity will receive the items. The winners can also earn a homemade trophy or a prize that links them to the next family game night (for example, a movie, game or snack).

Inspect your items before you donate them

Always inspect the items before donating. All donations should be in good working condition, contain all of their necessary parts in order to work properly, and are free of stains, tears and rips.

Discuss and educate

Now that the game is over, this is the perfect opportunity to teach your family about the importance of donating to charity, giving back to the community, and living an eco-friendly lifestyle. Also, feel free to discuss what your next family game night will be – that way, everyone has something to look forward to!

And there you have it – the perfect idea for your next family game night. Not only will this challenge teach your children about social responsibility, but it will also give you the perfect opportunity to declutter your home.

If you find that in the end, you have a hefty amount of items you would like to donate, it’s a good idea to consider a full-service junk removal company to lend a hand and dispose of the items for you.

Have a fun, family-filled night!
