Whenever possible, we donate reusable items to local charities. Our franchises work with a number of community-based charities as well as local branches of national charitable organizations, including Goodwill, Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. All of these organizations are looking for volunteers – in fact, they depend on them! Not sure where to get started? Here are some of the largest national organizations that are always looking for people like you:
Goodwill keeps countless items out of landfills each year by recycling and selling their donated items. The proceeds from the sales are used to provide job training and services to people who face difficulty finding employment. The company’s philosophy is: “The more people donate, shop, and volunteer for Goodwill, the stronger our community will be.” Goodwill has a variety of volunteer opportunities available – whether you only have a few hours every week or want a regularly scheduled position, they can accommodate you.
Habitat for Humanity’s mission is to fight poverty housing and homelessness around the world. The company has several ‘ReStore’ locations throughout the country, which offer new and gently used household and renovation materials. Accepted items include furniture, building materials, appliances, cabinetry, sinks, countertops, household and décor items. Volunteers are an integral part of the organization; every year in Canada, over 60,000 volunteers work with Habitat for Humanity.
The Salvation Army accepts goods in working and reusable condition; this includes furniture, shoes, clothing (of all ages), appliances, books, housewares, toys and much more. Just think: your junk can easily be someone else’s treasure! Instead of throwing out your unused items, you should consider donating them instead. Volunteer opportunities at The Salvation Army are varied and can include sorting clothes or pricing items at a thrift store, stocking shelves, answering phones, and other tasks.
Here are our top three reasons for why you should take action and volunteer right now:
To make a difference
Whether it’s for a whole day or just for a couple of hours, your help can make a world of a difference. A little bit can go a long way.
To fuel your passion
Volunteering is a great way to be involved in something you really care about. It will fuel your passion for helping others and also give you a great sense of accomplishment at the same time.
To have fun
Even though this one pretty much speaks for itself, it’s important to keep in mind that volunteering within your local community can be an amazing experience full of laughter and great memories. You are in for a good time – we promise.
