Recently I had the opportunity to join our Vancouver Downtown 1-800-GOT-JUNK? franchise on a Truck Day. As a Junktion (Corporate head office) employee it is so metimes hard to understand what our Truck Teams, the guys who are the core of our business, do day-to-day. As part of our corporate culture, every employee is given the opportunity to do a truck day and to be on the front lines and work with the Truck Teams.
My truck day started at 8am and shortly afterward I was on my way to our first job with Truck Team member Yoro. I knew right away when meeting Yoro, that with his fun disposition and great sense of humor, that today was going to be a great day! We met Tommy, the second Truck Team member for the day, at our first job and we got to work.
It was interesting to see and I was shocked at what people were getting rid of and considered “junk”. Items such as new suitcases, slightly used sleeping bags, designer purses, beds, sporting equipment and couches still in good condition, and the list goes on! That is where careful sorting of what we collected and methodical placement within the truck came into play. We wanted to make sure that all of the like items were together so when we went to the recycle centers, any charities or scrap metal depot that we could divert as much as possible from the landfill.I was more than willing to get right in there, help out and get my hands dirty if need be! Before each of our jobs we make a call ahead to let our customer know when we will be arriving. I had the opportunity to perform some of the call aheads, which helped us save time.
Being a true extrovert it was easy for me to engage with the customer and make them feel at ease about the process and getting rid of their junk. Some of the customers were making major life changes like moving to a new home, moving across the country. Some were experiencing break ups, so their partners left over “stuff” was headed out the door, whereas others were just simply getting rid of things they didn’t want anymore.
Throughout the day I spent time with both Yoro and Tommy individually as the other Truck Team member had to go off-load the second truck we were running. This gave me an opportunity to talk to each of them about their job, some of their experiences and also talk about just some plain old fun stuff too!
Overall, this was an amazing experience to give me insight into what the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? Truck Teams face on a daily basis. Our Truck Teams are enthusiastic, are exceptional ambassadors of the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? brand and haul junk with a smile on their face.
I want to thank our Vancouver Downtown franchise and especially Tommy and Yoro for their support, good humor, and for letting me be part of their world for the day.
