6 Father’s Day gifts that won’t end up in the junk drawer

These gifts are inspired by my Dad, Harry. Harry is a tough dad to buy for because he’s got everything he needs and isn’t exactly a collector-hobbyist-kind-of-guy. He doesn’t fish, his tie collection is retired and he has all the golf collateral one could ever need. I faced the Father’s Day gift challenge head on and found 6 offerings that even Harry would use and appreciate.

In our house the thermostat was the last resort if you were feeling chilly.

Me: I’m cold!

Dad: Well, put on a sweater!

Nest is a thermostat that your father will not only use, but he’ll respect you for knowing the importance of efficient home heating.  Nest is smart enough to remember what temperatures you like throughout the day. It comes with an app that let’s you adjust heating from anywhere, so even when Dad’s not home he can cool down his castle. Check out this video for a quick explanation!

EK USA Dri Cat

My dad once dropped his phone, sunglasses and camera in the lake during a canoe trip. No, not all at once, but during three separate occasions. The second ominous splash was the worst, the third was just hilarious. My Dad still appreciates a waterfront getaway and the EK USA Dri Cat means that he’ll never have to relive the horror of a soaking cell phone. Not only is it waterproof but it’s casing allows the screen to remain completely functional while protected.

Made by Dad: 67 Blueprints for Making Cool Stuff

One of my Dad’s famous quotes is, “If all else fails, read the instructions!”. I always admired his ability to patiently read instructions and then efficiently put together a new toy, old tent or piece of furniture.

If there’s a dad in your life who could use some cool points with his kids, then you’ve just found the perfect gift. No need to learn the newest video game, these analogue creative projects will have kids entertained, challenged and in awe of their brilliant father. Some of the projects include a Remote Release Zip Line for toy figures, a Bunk Bed Communicator and Shark Bite Paper Plates.

Every morning my dad listens to morning news radio as he gets ready for the day. KOHLER’s new Bluetooth speaker showerhead means that he could shower and listen to the radio at the same time – futuristic! The showerhead speaker is attached using a magnet so it’s easy to remove and bring with you after you’ve dried off. Super cool and great looking too!

Long before facial hair was a hipster trend, my Dad was rocking the Tom Selleck stache and he still does. Dr K’s Beard Tonic contains Apricot Kernel Oil for beard conditioning while Jojoba Oil, Vitamin E, Rosemary, Peppermint and Lavender Essential Oils soothe and revitalize the skin underneath.

The oil comes with a Cowboy Comb®. Not just a throwaway item, this ultimate grooming accessory for maintaining a beard or mustache is made in the USA and ergonomically designed with 27 teeth and wing-like ridges for added grip. The oil concoctions are handmade in Ireland, the only downside for my Scottish father.
