Cool home gadgets (for when you’re not home)
Human house sitters are so 2010. Keep your plants watered, your house lights active, your mailbox empty, and your dog fed from anywhere in the world!
You work hard to keep your home on track; don’t let a holiday derail your domestic duties. Here are 4 smart home solutions that are a threat to house-sitters everywhere!
1. Water your plants
Nothing can ruin a homecoming like houseplant homicide. Prevent plants from ending up in the 1-800-GOT-JUNK? pile with the help of technology. The Claber 8053 Oasis self watering system keeps up to 20 houseplants happy while you’re away. It distributes water to plants when they need it for up to 40 days and doesn’t have to be plugged into an electrical outlet or water tap – which means peace of mind for when you’re not home. Unfortunately this isn’t a solution for thirsty kids.
2. Keep house lights active, keep em guessing
You’ve probably been told to keep some of your houselights on and maybe a TV, with hopes you’ll trick thieves into thinking someone’s home. This could work if you normally watch TV 24/7 and leaves the lights on…all the time. If you’d like a more natural effect check out the Belkin WeMo switch. The switch works with the free WeMo app to give you wireless control of your home appliances and electronics. Whether you want to turn on a light from your kitchen, front yard, or Disneyland, WeMo Switch has you covered. It operates over mobile Internet, which means you can control home devices from anywhere you have an Internet connection.
3. Avoid a messy mailbox
Nothing says “rob me” like an overflowing mailbox. Prevent this possibility by subscribing to Earth Class Mail. Your mail is delivered to an Earth Class Mail location, it’s then scanned and sent to your private online account. You can choose what you want to do with it from there – forward it home, forward it to a friend or have it shredded. Not only will this give the illusion of occupants, it will keep you up-to-date and help organize your mail reducing paper clutter. 4. Feed your pet
As a pet owner you should know if your pet can be left alone in your home for an extended period of time. Apart from feeding, pet care can also include exercising, cuddling, brushing etc. Well, technology has the feeding part covered. Pinto Feed is an intelligent pet feeder that allows you to feed your pet using a smartphone. You can automate feeding or release the food whenever you’d like. The app also let’s you know when your pet has been fed and tracks eating habits, comparing them against their furry peers. Hope Whiskers doesn’t get a complex! More than one user can control the feedings in case you forget while you’re bungee jumping in Thailand.
