How Junk Pays It Forward

Recently a reporter’s query in my inbox caught my attention. The question was:  do you know someone who is one in a million? The context was a business person who’d make for a great profile. Hmmm…yes I do. I’d been working with our franchise partner in Ottawa on a story recognizing their 10 year anniversary. As I researched the wins, events, and charitable acts of the past 10 years in the capital a shining example of how successful businesses “pay it forward” unravelled…

At our company we have a philosophy, “It’s All About People.” This extends to our family of franchise partners as well. We all believe that when you have the right people and you treat them right, you can achieve almost anything in business. Since opening their Ottawa franchise in 2000, Luc and Pierrette Raymond have placed a high priority on hiring quality truck team members and providing them with a positive, nurturing work environment. As a result, through working for the Raymonds, more than 125 college students have paid for their education, some even going on to be successful entrepreneurs! More student apartments than you can imagine have been furnished, and several employees have been recognized for their hard work with weekend get-aways. This MOvember, as 1-800-GOT-JUNK? supports men’s cancers, the truck team members in Ottawa are all growing moustaches to raise awareness for this cause.

The team has also undergone “compassion” or “sensitivity” training to ensure they are particularly compassionate to the needs of people letting go of their stuff. Wow!

Ottawa’s charity extends beyond the truck team though. Throughout the past decade, Pierrette Raymond has spearheaded numerous charity events, including donating over $150,000 in goods to local charities such as Habitat for Humanity, Shepherd’s of Good Hope, Yard Sale for the Cure, and Knights of Columbus. This winter they will team up with a local metal recycler to raise funds for the Make a Wish Foundation.   Community events include free e-waste recycling on Earth Day and Spring/Fall Cleaning the Capital with the City of Ottawa.

Success is more than black numbers on a P & L statement. Often times it’s measured by the reward gained from giving back, paying it forward to the community that has helped you to be a success. If you’re in business, I hope some of what you’ve read here will inspire you with your people. We welcome your comments.
