Junk Removal for Breast Cancer Research

June 3, 2010

Toronto Yard Sale for the Cure

Do any of us truly realize the potential of our junk to heal the sick, make people smile, raise big bucks?! Can computer recycling, TV disposal, or appliance removal be achieved at a charity yard sale on a sunny day in May? Yes, they can! There’s a lot to celebrate after last weekend’s successful Yard Sale for the Cure across Canada. Wow! 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and Remax, both sponsors of this innovative charity for breast cancer treatment and breast cancer research, took this charity to new levels of awareness. The number of funds raised in total will be some time coming, but here at 1-800-GOT-JUNK? we’re proud of raising the largest amount since we began participating in the yard sales:  $34,250 and counting!

On the heels of a successful, 5th annual Yard Sale for the Cure, breast cancer research nabbed worldwide headlines, also. Could all our efforts be starting to show results? Yesterday news outlets announced that several experiments involving mice have shown that a new vaccine can prevent breast cancer. While any vaccine for sufferers of the disease may take years to evolve, it’s gratifying to know the funds we raise and education we impart are translating into action.

In 2010, 1.5 million people worldwide will be told they have breast cancer. I’d like to challenge everyone reading this blog to share this information, get involved with charity events so that we can keep elevating this issue until we have a cure. Yard Sale for the Cure is an annual one-day event that is held the last Saturday of each May. The idea is that your clutter can cure cancer. It’s a Canadian charity currently being facilitated by the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. To date, the charity has raised $650,000. Selling junk in yard sales is one of many events.
