Your Clutter Can Cure Cancer

May 10, 2010

The countdown is on for the 5th annual Yard Sale for the Cure, an amazing charity for breast cancer that 1-800-GOT-JUNK? is proud to be a sponsor of once again. This year things are a little different…the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation has taken Yard Sale on as one of its signature fundraisers. Wow! This is sure to mean an even greater awareness and more money may be raised to fund breast cancer research and education.

Yard Sale for the Cure originated in the Beaches neighbourhood of Toronto when breast cancer survivor, Rachael Smith decided to hold a yard sale to raise money as a way to give back a little to all the wonderful people who had helped her during her illness and recovery. Of course Rachael had stumbled upon an effective way to easily raise funds. Everybody loves a yard sale in the spring! We either have junk we’re trying to get rid of or we’re drawn to someone else’s junk on those sparkling pre-summer mornings when we’re out walking the dog or jogging. Who can resist?

Before long Rachael and her husband’s yard sales caught on and Yard Sale for the Cure blossomed across the country. Today, Yard Sale has raised $650,000 for the cure, and sponsors such as 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and Remax, are natural fits for donating the stuff people no longer need and selling it for a great cause. But anybody can host a Yard Sale, receive promotional material, and do their part for breast cancer.
