Another Year, Another Earth Day.

April 19, 2010

A reporter today posed the question whether Earth Day has become more of an opportunity to promote a company or an event than a serious reflection of our Earth’s fragility. I can’t tell you more about it than that because I merely glimpsed the headline somewhere during my rush to start the day, and I temporarily dismissed it.

Now, with the majority of the day’s work behind me, as I sit to write about Earth Day, that headline creeps upon my brain and I’m tempted to find it and learn more about what prompted the question. It certainly does seem that Earth Day has become a big deal in the past few years. We now have Earth Hour, earth day songs, plant-a-tree-for-Earth Day programs, and many more informative and promotional events.

Each year it does become more challenging to get a reporter’s attention about an Earth Day event that one of our franchise partners is rolling out, so many others doing the same thing. Another e-waste drive?! More electronic waste to responsibly dispose of? Why, in Ottawa this past weekend 1-800-GOT-JUNK? diverted 8 tonnes of e-waste from the landfill! They lined up in droves in Kelowna, BC to take advantage of free computer recycling and TV recycling. In fact, that Earth Day event forged a new partnership between 1-800-GOT-JUNK? and two local businesses: Organizing Help and Okanagan Paper Shredding. The benefit of course is that now even more people will find out about this opportunity to help save our planet, and perhaps spread the good word…

I know that the little promotion we can do as a junk removal company contributes a small amount to the worldwide push to raise awareness about Earth Day…and by the way, Happy 40th Birthday, Earth Day!…and yes, it feels good to get some recognition as an organization that is environmentally conscientious.

On April 22nd, and every day, 1-800-GOT-JUNK? hopes you do your part to celebrate Earth Day, even if it’s through the simultaneous, shameless promotion of your business.

Was very satisfied with the guys who removed a large freezer from my basement. They were very courteous and friendly and did a great job. The price waqs quite reasonable. I will definetly recommend them to my friends and if the occasion arises in the future I will call them back. They were prompt and neat also.
